Thailand for Sale
Once again, apologies for the long absence. Life and work get in the way sometimes. Anyway, I spent part of the last couple of months trying to put together a book manuscript on Thailand that combines some of the posts on this blog (hopefully improved from the original) with some new material. A draft of the manuscript should be done in a couple of weeks — at which point I’ll try to pitch it to a few publishers — but I am posting here a preview of one of the six chapters. The essay in question puts together most of the stuff on this blog about prostitution and politics. It’s slightly adapted from the version that will hopefully be in the book, as I tried to turn it into a stand alone piece that might be suitable for publication in a magazine (whether in print or online). You can download it HERE in .pdf format. Of course, this is still work in progress, so any comment is highly appreciated (whether you wish it to be public or private, that’s up to you). Especially welcome are suggestions for improvements in both contents and style.

To MongerSEA: Noted with thanks.
Also, would you be available to write an article – i’ll give you a theme – for a magazine?
James F: Sure, provided it’s on a topic I know something about.
Good to see you back, I wondered if you might have fallen foul of the dreaded LM. Glad to see you didn’t.
Rich
Thanks Rich. As for LM, I make a conscious effort to stay away from that; I don’t think there is anything on this site that qualifies even under the most expansive definition. What I try to do here is offer the strongest indictment of the system I can think of within the confines of Thai law. I have better things to do than becoming a martyr.
I’m also happy and relieved to see you back in action! Will download this now and look forward very much to reading it.
You have produced a well constructed and well written article.
I agree that the Thai establishment’s unwillingness to acknowledge the Thai only sex industry is firmly rooted in the hierarchical elitist class system, while ultimately concerned with the preservation of financial gain. As an example of the country’s all pervasive corruption, overseen and managed by the ever present Poo Yai’s, I think that this idea deserves further consideration and treatment.
KJF: Brillantly written piece. Hope you’re successful in finding a publisher. I for one will be buying it.
I’ve had a deep interest in Thai politics, political history and culture for many years, but only recently started reading your blog. You have a wonderful gift for truly insightful and intelligent analysis and it’s so refreshing for me to read your articles (and also some of the responses). As has been mentioned, there’s not enough of these kind of forums of thought, especially within Thailand.
Hope you manage to keep finding the time to add to the blog. And I hope to be able to contribute something to the debate(s) once I’ve digested everything…
Good essay.
Refreshing.
Tell it like it is!
